Green hydrogen and green ammonia are emerging as promising alternatives to fossil fuels in the race for clean energy. Both are produced using renewable sources, making them environmentally friendly options.
Green Hydrogen
This is hydrogen gas (H₂) produced through electrolysis, where an electric current splits water molecule (H₂O) into hydrogen and oxygen. The key is using renewable electricity sources like solar or wind power to ensure a clean production process with zero carbon emissions. Green hydrogen offers a versatile clean fuel for various applications, including transportation and industrial processes. However, storing and transporting hydrogen can be challenging due to its gaseous nature.
Green Ammonia (NH₃)
Made by combining green hydrogen with nitrogen (N₂) from the air through a process called Haber-Bosch synthesis. This results in ammonia, a liquid at room temperature. Green ammonia holds promise for easier storage and transportation compared to hydrogen. Additionally, ammonia is already used in fertilizer production, and it can also be used as a clean fuel for power generation or transportation.
